Description
By tradition, the Tikhvin icon first appeared in Rus’ under Grand Prince Dimitry Donskoy in 1383. Its wondrous discovery took place in marshy ground, where Tikhvin’s residents found it floating in the air and shining with a dazzling light.
Many miracles followed prayers before the Tikhvin icon, but the most remarkable happened in 1613, when the Tikhvin monastery was shielded from Swedish invasion. The Mother of God, along with Sts Varlaam of Khutyn, Zosima of Solovki, and Nicholas, appeared to the novice Martinian in a dream. St Nicholas said, “Tell the commanders and all the people: the Mother of God has interceded with Her Son for your deliverance, and you will witness God’s mercy and victory.” The enemy, believing themselves surrounded by a vast army, panicked and retreated.
The original icon, housed in the Tikhvin Monastery, was stolen during the Second World War. It is currently overseas, in Chicago.
The icon’s feast day is 26 June (9 July).
Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design.
Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
