Wood-Mounted Icons
Printed icons are images of saints and holy figures printed on paper or a more durable material, then blessed. Our collection includes icons of various sizes and shapes for both church and home use. These icons depict Christ, the Mother of God, angels, saints, and scenes from major feast days. Every Orthodox Christian traditionally keeps a small icon of their patron saint close at hand. Many believers turn to the Mother of God in times of need, and a small icon of Her is easy to carry in a wallet, cardholder, or pocket. In our catalog, you will find a wide range of printed icons of the Mother of God, including the Seven Arrows, the Panagia the Queen of All, and the Directress Icon. Car icons traditionally depict St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, while an icon of a profession's patron saint is a fitting addition to any office. A small, affordable icon in no way diminishes one's faith — on the contrary, by staying close to a person day after day, it becomes a steady source of support through life's everyday and family concerns.
Materials Used in Printed Icons
We work with paper, cardboard, wood, plastic, and lacquer. High-quality images, often reproductions of well-known, wonder-working icons, are printed and mounted onto a wooden panel or another base material. Icons may be further adorned with gilding, foil, engraving, semi-precious stones, or decorative frames. Lacquered icons receive one or several protective layers of lacquer.
How Printed Icons Are Made
Lacquered icons
The printed image is mounted onto a wooden base and coated with a thin protective layer of lacquer, which shields the icon from environmental wear. Several layers of lacquer give the image visual depth and dimension. This technique draws on the traditions of Palekh and Mstyora lacquer miniature painting, and an "antique-style" finish is also available.
Wooden icons
The printed image is mounted onto a wooden base made of alder or birch and coated with a thin layer of lacquer. These icons can be further decorated with gilding, laser engraving, or rhinestones.
Our catalog offers a wide selection of printed icons. If you want to know more about the creation process visit our lacquered Icons Workshop page.
