Description

In 1240, two monks settled on the site where the Holy Dormition Pochaev Lavra now stands. One day, as one of them prayed, he beheld the Most Holy Theotokos standing on a rock, as if engulfed in flames. He called the other monk, who was blessed with the same vision.

On the rock remained the imprint of the Most Holy Theotokos's right foot—a mark that, even today, mysteriously refills with water. No matter how many pilgrims draw from its bounty, the pool never runs dry.

The Pochaev Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos came to be linked with Metropolitan Neophyte. In 1559, while passing through Volhynia, he visited a devout noblewoman named Anna Goyskaya, who lived near Pochaev. As a blessing, he left her an icon of the Mother of God he had brought from Byzantium. Before long, people began to notice light streaming from the Virgin's image. When Anna's brother, Philip, was healed before the icon in 1597, she entrusted it to the monks on Pochaev Hill.

In time, a church in honour of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos arose on the hilltop, becoming part of the monastic community. Over the centuries, the Pochaev Lavra weathered numerous storms—Lutheran persecution, Turkish raids, and Uniate control—yet under the Mother of God’s watchful eye, it survived every hardship.

Commemorated on August 5, September 21, April 21 (movable feast).

This icon is painted using the following materials:

Tempera paints
Lime, pine, or alder board
Gesso
Colored wax
Gold leaf
Linseed oil
Hide glue
Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Size

This icon of the Mother of God is available in several sizes:

30×41 cm
40×52 cm

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The background is covered with gold leaf. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
