Description

This icon received its name thanks to the miraculous finding of the eponymous hymn It Is Truly Meet. The alternative name for this icon is Merciful.

In this icon, the Christ Child’s face is turned away from his mother's; his posture resembles the "Elevation of the Infant" iconography. Their hands touch through a scroll, symbolising the connection between heaven and earth through prayer. In some versions, the Christ Child's hand and the scroll appear immersed in Mary’s open palm, which some scholars interpret as representing God’s incarnation.

Tradition links this icon to the origin of the prayer "It is Truly Meet." In the late 10th century, an elder and a novice lived on Mount Athos. One evening, the elder left the novice alone. During the night, a traveller visited. The novice welcomed him, and as they prayed before an icon of the "Merciful" Mother of God, the stranger noticed they sang the hymn differently, beginning with "It is truly meet…" As they sang, light shone from the icon. At the novice’s request, the stranger inscribed the prayer on a stone, then revealed himself as Gabriel and vanished.

The icon’s feast day is 11 / 24 June.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

Tempera paints
Lime, alder, or pine board
Gesso
Colored wax
Gold leaf
Linseed oil
Hide glue
Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel, covered with gold leaf. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
