Handmade Icon of the Virgin of the Passion made from finely ground semiprecious stones by master iconographers of St Elisabeth Convent.

About the Icon

Of Cretan origin, the Virgin of the Passion, known in the West as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, is a theological variant of Hodegetria. Two angels appear beside the Virgin's nimbus, showing the young Christ the cross, the lance, and the sponge. The angels thus reveal why the Child stirs in his mother's arms and why her face becomes so tense and mournful. One of the Child's sandals becomes loose as He begins to move closer to His Mother. This prototype is also called the Virgin of the Thumb, since Jesus is sometimes shown grabbing Mary's thumb with His two little hands.

In Russia, the icon is known under the name Strastnaia. In Greece — Panagia tou Pathous.
