Description of the Tenderness icon

Orthodox tradition recognizes over 800 icons dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, with most falling under the categories of Orans, Hodegetria, and Eleusa. Tradition has it that the Apostle Luke painted the first three images of the Mother of God, leading to the development of these iconic types.
 
The Eleusa icon type, meaning "Endearment" or "Mercy," is known in Russian Orthodoxy as "Tenderness." In these icons, the Mother of God and the Child Jesus are depicted in a close embrace, their cheeks touching. There is a sense of infinite love between the two, uniting the earthly and heavenly realms, as well as the divine and human. The Mother of God is not only shown as a nurturing mother but also as a symbol of a pure soul forever connected to the Lord.
 
One of the most famous icons of this type is the Vladimir icon. Other icons in this category include:
  • The Don icon;
  • the Feodorovskaya icon;
  • the Zhirovitskaya icon;
  • the Seeker of the Lost icon;
  • the Pochaev icon.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, alder, or pine board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Some elements of the icon are painted with various shades of gold. The halo is adorned with chiseling on gesso and gold-painting. The background is white gold. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We suggest placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case immediately.

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size, decorations, the complexity of its composition, gold-plating. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
