St John Chrysostom Icon

Description

Saint John Chrysostom, whose name translates from the Greek as "Golden-Mouthed", was born in Antioch, Syria, to a devout Christian family. His father, Secundus, held a prominent position, but he died early, leaving John's mother to raise him in faith as a widow when she was only 20 years of age.

Despite his parents' Christian faith, John was baptised at age 20. He later advocated for infant baptism in his writings.

Following his mother's death, John embarked on a period of intense asceticism in the desert for four years. He led a strict and ascetic lifestyle, which ultimately affected his health throughout his life.

Returning from the desert, John was ordained as a deacon and later, at the age of 40, as a priest, and he was entrusted with preaching the Word of God to the people.

Upon becoming Archbishop of Constantinople, John was deeply troubled by the corruption, extravagant clergy lifestyles and excessive spending within the Church. He started a campaign against these vices, which inevitably caused widespread discontent, particularly with Empress Eudoxia, whom he publicly criticised.

In 404, under the influence of Empress Eudoxia, a council of bishops that convened in the vicinity of Chalcedon unfairly condemned John to exile. He spent his remaining three years in exile and died at the age of 60.

This icon is painted using the following materials: tempera paints, solid wood board (lime, pine), gesso, tone-adjusted wax, gold leaf, linseed oil,  hide glue, and varnish.

Decoration

This St John Chrysostom icon is decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo, and other elements. The icon may also be decorated with semi-precious and precious gemstones, a thin metal sheet with wrought ornaments or an oklad made from tin foil or fabric. The icon may also be placed into an opening or a non-opening icon case made of oak or birch wood.
