Description

Saint Gregory Palamas, commemorated on the second Sunday of Great Lent, is revered for his profound contributions to Orthodox theology and his association with the practice of hesychasm, a form of continuous prayer.

Born in 1296 to a prominent family in Constantinople, Gregory received an exceptional classical education in grammar, rhetoric, physics, and logic. However, at 18, he embraced monastic life on Mount Athos.

Gregory's legacy endures through his extensive theological works, sermons, and polemical writings, which he began to write in 1332. Yet, his most significant contribution lies in his advocacy and personal practice of ceaseless prayer, or hesychasm ("stillness" in Greek) and his teaching on the uncreated energies of God and the Light of Tabor. He believed that through hesychastic prayer, a person, with God's grace, could purify their mind and body from sinful thoughts and deeds to the extent of experiencing Christ and the uncreated light of Tabor, similar to what the apostles witnessed during Christ's Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the margins and the halo.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
