Description

A painted icon of the Exaltation of the Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. This icon shows the miraculous uncovering of the Cross of Jesus Christ, which happened in Jerusalem in 326.

The Empress Helena, mother to the Emperor Constantine the Great, set out on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. At the behest of her son, she sought to uncover tangible evidence of the Gospel narratives.  Through her determined efforts, the Holy Cross upon which Christ was crucified, along with the sites of His Crucifixion and Burial, were miraculously rediscovered. The news drew crowds of believers eager to venerate the holy relic.  To ensure that everyone present could behold the Cross, it was raised high by Makarios, the Bishop of Jerusalem.

Icons of the feast often depict Emperor Constantine the Great, even though he was not physically present in Jerusalem at the time.  The Church seeks to convey that the glorification of the Holy Cross would not have transpired without the unwavering faith and active participation of the Emperor.

In 17th century Russia, icons of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross depicted, in addition to the Holy Equals-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helena, the reigning Russian Tsar and Patriarch.  This detail served to emphasize the continuity that existed between Ancient Rome, the New Rome of Constantinople, and the emerging Third Rome – the burgeoning Muscovite state.

Feast day September 27.

The inscription on the icon can be made in any language.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the background, and the halos are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration. Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
