This lacquered icon The Descent from the Cross was made in the lacquered icons workshop of St Elisabeth Convent.
The original icon was a painting by Vassily Vereshchagin, a Russian artist, who created a series of icons for Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow in 1875-1880. This series consisted of six paintings, each five meters high: Praying for the Cup, Behold the Man, Carrying the Cross, The Crucifixion by the Romans, The Descent from the Cross, and The Descent into the Grave.
