Crucifixion Hand-painted Icon

The icon of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is painted by hand in the icon-painting studio of St Elisabeth Convent.

In the icon, Christ is painted surrounded by the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, John the Theologian, Longinos the Centurion, and other witnesses. There are angels hovering over the cross. Behind the crucifixion, there is a wall of the city of Jerusalem. There is an image of the cave at the foot of the Cross, the skull and bones of Adam are depicted. According to tradition, the bones of Adam appeared at the moment of Christ's death due to a great earthquake that split the rock. The blood of Christ got from the Cross onto the bones of Adam, bringing redemption to the first man on Earth and to all of humanity.

The crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary is commemorated on Holy Friday of Great Lent.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the background, and the halos are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

 

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration. Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
