A lacquered icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord on wood. An image printed on paper is glued to a wooden board and covered with transparent lacquer. This is a copy of a famous icon of Dionysius, a prominent Russian icon painter of the late XV - early XVI century, a follower of Andrei Rublev. This icon is filled with solemn and peaceful mood; the golden background and the smoothness of the lines make all figures look airy and weightless. The crucified Christ looks as if he embraces the humankind with his arms stretched on the Cross. According to the tradition, Jesus was crucified on the exact location of Adam's grave, so the Savior's Blood washed away the original sin of the first man. The Mother of God is shown standing to the right of the Savior, and St John the disciple of Christ together with a Roman soldier is shown to the left. The Church tradition asserts that the soldier's name was Longinus, and he was a Roman centurion who came to believe in Christ and became one of the first Christian martyrs.
