Description
Venerable Benedict is known as the founder of the Western Benedictine monastic order. Born in Nursia, Italy, in 480, he went to Rome for education at 14. While in Rome, he was appalled by the societal immorality he observed. So he abandoned his studies and retreated to the mountains, where he embraced monastic vows.
His spiritual presence soon drew others to seek a similar path. Benedict, now a leader, established a community of disciples, united by strict rules. However, not everyone embraced this rigorous framework. Facing disapproval and slander, Benedict relocated to Mount Cassino, where he established the renowned Monte Cassino Monastery.
Within the walls of Monte Cassino, Saint Benedict wrote the monastic rule, later adopted by countless Catholic monasteries. It emphasized the complete dismissal of personal possessions, unwavering obedience, and continuous labour. Aspiring monks were required to dedicate a year as novices before taking their vows. The abbot, revered as the head of the community, wielded full authority over its structure and functioning.
Moreover, Saint Benedict's life was marked by profound spiritual gifts, bestowed upon him by the Lord. Through heartfelt prayers, he brought healing to many and worked miracles.
Commemorated on March 27.

Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.
