Description

The icon "Christ in Glory" is a theological treatise rendered in paint, and its central place in the iconostasis is no accident.

The iconography draws from Scripture: the visions of Ezekiel and the Revelation of John the Theologian, containing descriptions of both the One on the Throne and the bodiless powers.

The icon’s surface features a red square with extended sides, symbolising the earth. The four beasts of the Apocalypse appear at its corners. These are the symbols of the Evangelists: an angel for Matthew, a lion for Mark, an ox for Luke, and an eagle for John, who spread the Good News to every corner of the earth.

St Irenaeus of Lyons saw here different facets of the Lord’s portrayal in the Gospels. The angel symbolises the Incarnation, the ox Christ’s sacrifice, the eagle spiritual perception, and the lion the Son of God’s royal authority.

On the red tetramorph with the Evangelists’ symbols rests a blue oval – the realm of bodiless powers. Winged angels with human faces fill the oval. Above it, on a red diamond (a conventional image of God's luminous, fiery nature), sits Christ enthroned. A similar red diamond appears in the “Unburnt Bush” icon of the Mother of God.

At the foot of the throne, stand more of these bodiless powers in the form of mysterious winged wheels ringed with eyes, as described by the prophet Ezekiel: “Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around” (Ezekiel 1:18).

Materials

Natural wooden board (lime, pine, alder) with oak splines, cloth from low-count fabric (linen, canvas), gesso, tempera paints (ground minerals, precious and semiprecious stones mixed with egg yolk), gold leaf of various hues, tinted wax, linseed oil, hide glue, varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic).

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the margins, the background, the halo and elements of the icon, gold-painting on the vestment and semiprecious stones in casts.

This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design.

Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
