064-XC Christ in Majesty
A lacquered printed icon on wood.
This icon uses the language of colors and symbols to depict the Advent of Christ, shining with divine glory, on the Judgment Day, based on the books of Ezekiel and the Revelation.
Christ is in the center of the icon, with three geometrical shapes - a red rhombus, a blue circle and a red square - one inside another behind his back. Red is the color of light and earth. Blue is the color of height, of the heavenly and divine things. Their combination symbolizes the divine and human natures of the Savior as the God-man. The red rhombus that has four corners is a symbolic representation of the four cardinal points; the blue circle stands for the invisible heavenly realm.
The right hand of Jesus makes the blessing sign, which means both the blessing and the unchangeability of the verdict concerning the final fate of every person. The Savior holds an open Book with words "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28) in it. This Book may mean the Gospel as the Good News that should be preached around the globe, or Jesus himself as the Word of God, or the Book of Revelation, which only the Lamb can open (see Chapter 5 of the Revelation).
This icon of Christ in Majesty also reminds us of the imminent righteous Lord's Judgment and the fact that we will have to be responsible for everything we do.
