Description

Born Anastasios Kefalas on 1 October 1846, Saint Nectarios entered the world within a large, yet poor family in the Turkish city of Silivri. Here, he spent his formative years until the age of 14, before venturing to Istanbul for further studies.

In 1886 he was ordained a priest and entrusted with serving at the Church of St. Savvas in Alexandria. Within months, he received the esteemed title of Archimandrite. His talents soon led him to positions within the Patriarch's Secretariat and eventually, as the representative of His Holiness in Cairo.

However, envy cast a shadow on his rapid rise. Unfounded accusations led to his removal from his post in 1890.

Yet, Nectarios' piety and teachings continued to resonate, reaching the ears of influential figures. This ultimately led to an offer to lead a theological school in Athens. Soon, Nectarios founded the first women's monastery on the Greek island of Aegina.

People from all walks of life seek his intercession, particularly for healing from cancer and other serious illnesses. Remembered during his lifetime for his own life of hardship, he intercedes for those facing financial struggles.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the halo, the background and the margins of the icon. 

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the Saint Nektarios icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration. Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
