106-CB St Nectarios of Aegina Icon

Saint Nectarios, born Anastasios Kefalas on October 1, 1846, in Silivri, Turkey, came from a large but impoverished family and moved to Istanbul at 14 for his studies. Ordained as a priest in 1886, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming Archimandrite and later serving in the Patriarch's Secretariat in Alexandria. Unfortunately, envy and unfounded accusations led to his dismissal in 1890, but his teachings and integrity attracted influential supporters. This connection enabled him to lead a theological school in Athens and ultimately found the first women's monastery on the Greek island of Aegina.

The icon of St Nectarios of Aegina reflects the artistry of lacquered icons workshop, where we create folding icons, crosses, and various-sized icons.

The icon creation process:
1. Preparation of wooden surface:
- Large wooden boards are cut into smaller panels.
- Edges are smoothed to achieve an oval shape.

2. Lamella formation:
- Wooden panels are separated into lamellas, which are polished for a smooth finish.
- Lamellas are glued back together to form a solid base.

3. Image selection:
- Images are stored and laminated, ready for use.
- Images are sorted based on specific orders.

4. Image placement:
- Images are cut and rounded to match the wooden panel size.
- Symmetry is verified by a specialist.

5. Adhesion process:
- Special glue is applied to the wooden panel surface.
- The image is placed, then compressed with fabric for secure attachment.
- Polish is applied to edges for protection.

6. Final touch:
- After thorough drying, each icon is blessed.
- A convent stamp is placed on the back for authenticity.
