Description

St. Herman of Alaska icon depicts the Russian Orthodox monk who lived in Alaska in the 18th century.

Saint Herman of Alaska, born in 1757 to a merchant family in Serpukhov, Russia, embarked on a path of monastic life at a young age, entering the Trinity-Sergius Hermitage near St. Petersburg as a novice at 16. Five years later, he withdrew to Valaam in search of more solitude.

Saint Herman joined other monks in answering the call to join the Kodiak Mission in 1793. This mission aimed to spread the Orthodox faith among the indigenous peoples of Alaska and surrounding islands.

Saint Herman eventually settled on Spruce Island, which he named New Valaam. He lived a life of self-denial and dedication, playing an instrumental role in spreading Orthodoxy in Russian America and leading tens of thousands of Aleuts to the baptism.

Saint Herman remained on Spruce Island for nearly his entire life, devoting himself to prayer and manual labour. Despite being considered for ordination as a hieromonk and elevation to the rank of archimandrite, he humbly declined any positions of authority, choosing to remain a simple monk until his peaceful repose in December 1836 at 81.

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, and the background are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
