Description

Saint Alexander Nevsky was born in 1221 in Pereslavl-Zalessky. Between 1236 and 1240, he effectively ruled Novgorod, offering vital assistance during his father's rule in Kiev.

Prince Alexander achieved his most renowned military victories in his youth. At nineteen, he won a significant victory over the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva (1240), leading to his triumphant title "Nevsky”. Two years later, at age 21, he gained more fame by defeating the German knights on Lake Peipus, in the Battle on the Ice. Although his later years were replete with political and diplomatic achievements, he would sometimes go back to the battlefield, never experiencing defeat in his lifetime.

Shortly after being tonsured to the schema on 14 November 1263, Prince Alexander completed his earthly journey. Upon his death, Metropolitan Kirill lamented, "The sun of the Russian land has set!"

Commemorated on June 6, September 12, and December 6.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Lime, alder, or pine board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

  • 7.5×10 cm (without a hand-carved rectangular central panel, shoulder-long)

  • 40×52 cm

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
