A handpainted icon of Saint Matushka Olga (Michael) of Kwethluk.

She was affectionately called "Matushka Olga," or "Mother Olga," which is the term used to refer to a priest's wife in the Orthodox tradition. She successfully raised eight children to adulthood, and remarkably, she even gave birth to some of them without the assistance of a midwife. While her husband dedicated his time to ministering to multiple parishes, she tirelessly attended to the responsibilities of raising her family and extending help to others.

In addition to carrying out various duties typically assigned to priests' wives, such as baking the eucharistic bread, Matushka Olga possessed an extensive knowledge of hymns for feast days. She had the tunes and lyrics memorized for occasions like Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Pascha, all in Yup'ik, her native Eskimo language. Matushka Olga was renowned for her compassion and support towards individuals who had experienced abuse of any kind. Her empathy knew no bounds, and she consistently offered care and solace to those in need.

“The God who makes the moving curtain of the northern lights made you as a living light, shining in the far north and lighting up the desolate with His great beauty. Beholding this radiance, we, your children, lift up our voices and sing.” - In the first lines of her Akathist. 

"O Blessed Mother Olga, pray to God for us!"

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo, and other elements of the icon; chiseling on gesso. 

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
