Description
Saint Seraphim, originally known as Prokhor Isidorovich Moshnin, was born on July 19, 1754, into a merchant family in Kursk. His early years were marked by a miraculous event when he survived a fall from a bell tower his father was constructing, and later, after his father's passing his mother continued to build.
At the age of 17, Prokhor received his mother's blessing to enter a monastery, embarking on a path of obedience at the Sarov hermitage.
In 1786, he took monastic vows under the name Seraphim and was ordained a priest two years later. Seraphim then secluded himself in a forest cell, dedicating his days to prayer and labour. Remarkably, wild animals, including bears, would approach him, and he fed them by hand.
Once robbers broke into the hermit's dwelling. They brutally beat him, leaving him on the brink of life and death. The saint had an axe with him, but he did not use it for protection. Obviously, there was no money in the cell. In the end, the robbers repented of their deed, and the monk's protection helped them avoid criminal punishment.
As his next feat, he took the oath of silence and meticulously observed it. For a thousand nights, the elder prayed on a small stone under the pines, raising his hands to heaven.
In 1815, Seraphim began receiving visitors, offering each person words of love and wisdom tailored to their needs. He referred to everyone as "my joy," as he found true happiness in connecting with others.
After his passing on January 2, 1833, he was discovered kneeling in prayer with his hands crossed in a cruciform position.
Commemorated on January 15, August 1 (uncovering of the saint's holy relics).
Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.
