The Summary of the Icon

The Mother of God "Burning Bush" icon is based on events from the Old Testament book of Exodus. When the prophet Moses was tending sheep, he noticed a bush that was not burning. Approaching closer, Moses heard the voice of God from the flames, commanding him to lead the Jews out of Egyptian slavery. The unburnt bush symbolizes the Virgin Mary, whom the fire of God did not consume during the Immaculate Conception.

The background of the icon consists of two quadrilaterals. Green symbolizes the bush, and red the flames of fire. In the corners of the red quadrilateral, the symbols of the Apocalypse of the evangelist John the Theologian are depicted - a man, a lion, a calf, and an eagle. Also, angels may be represented on the icon: Michael with a staff, Raphael with a vessel, Uriel with a flaming sword, Selaphiel with a censer, Varahiel with a cluster of grapes, and Gabriel with a branch of the announcement.

In the hand of the Mother of God is a ladder, which symbolizes the spiritual ladder that raises a person from earth to heaven. On some icons, you can see the Gates of Ezekiel, representing the Immaculate Conception and the birth of the Savior.

Feast day: September 4th.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

Tempera paints
Lime, alder, or pine board
Gesso
Colored wax
Gold leaf
Linseed oil
Hide glue
Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon of Theotokos and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St. Elisabeth Convent.
