Description
The "Reigning" icon of the Theotokos manifested on 15 March 1917, the day Tsar Nicholas II abdicated. News spread across Russia of a miraculous icon’s appearance in the village of Kolomenskoye near Moscow, which was named "The Reigning." The Queen of Heaven is depicted as an earthly sovereign, wearing red royal porphyry, a crown, and holding a sceptre and orb.
It was later discovered that the icon had resided in the Ascension Convent in Moscow until 1812. During Napoleon’s invasion, it was hidden in the basement of the Ascension Church in Kolomenskoye, remaining there for 105 years, until it reappeared at the dawn of Russia’s 20th-century turmoil.
The icon’s royal imagery suggests that the Mother of God has assumed care and concern for the faithful children of the Russian Church. The "Reigning" icon belongs to the Panakhranta type.

Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, pine, or alder board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
A hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, the background and other elements of the icon are covered with gold leaf.
It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
