The brief story about the Life-giving Spring icon

The finding of the "Life-giving Spring" icon of the Mother of God is associated with the warrior Leo Marcellus, who later became the Byzantine emperor (457–473).

Once, in a grove of Constantinople, the future emperor met a blind man who was wandering in search of the way to the city. Deciding to help him, the warrior offered him to rest, and he went for water.

Soon Leo heard a voice commanding him to fetch water from the spring under the canopy of trees and to apply mud from the spring to the blind man's eyes. Leo did as he was commanded, and then the traveller regained his sight and went to Constantinople glorifying the Mother of God.

When Leo Marcellus became emperor, he ordered the spring to be cleaned and a church to be built over it in honour of the Mother of God. The spring was named "Life-giving" in commemoration of the miracle performed by the Most Holy Virgin Mary.

After capturing Constantinople, the Turks destroyed the church. It was only reconstructed in the first half of the 19th century.

Commemoration of the "Life-giving Spring" icon of the Mother of God falls on the Friday of the Bright Week, when the restoration of the church was completed.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. It is decorated with gold-plating of the halos, the background, the margins, and other elements.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

The final price of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
