Description

The saintly sisters Martha and Mary, along with their brother Saint Lazarus, held a special place in the Lord's heart. The Gospel recounts how, during one visit to their home in Bethany, Martha busily prepared a meal for Christ, while Mary sat at His feet, intently listening to His teachings.  Concerned about the workload, Martha implored the Lord to instruct Mary to assist her with the household chores.  In response, Jesus gently reminded Martha that Mary had chosen "the good portion," which would not be taken away from her (Luke 10:38-42).

When illness befell their brother, Lazarus, the sisters sent an urgent message to Christ. However, the Lord arrived in Bethany only after Lazarus had been dead for four days.  Martha hastened to meet Him alone, and the Lord assured her that Lazarus would rise again. Thereafter, He went on to perform the miraculous deed of raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-46).

Holy Tradition teaches that both Martha and Mary were among the holy myrrh-bearing women who ventured to the tomb of the Lord after His crucifixion. Following the righteous Lazarus's exile from Jerusalem, the sisters travelled together with their brothers to various lands. They departed peacefully to the Lord, but the date and details of their earthly repose remain unknown.

The holy myrrh-bearing women, including Saint Martha, are commemorated on the Third Sunday of Pascha (Easter).

Commemorated on July 17.

  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo, and other elements. 

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon of St Martha and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
