Description
The icon depicts the holy myrrh bearers approaching the Tomb of the Lord, with vessels of myrrh in their hands and some also carrying torches. Their steps are hesitant, and their faces are downcast. However, their trepidation transforms into awe when the Angel appears to them with the joyous news of the Resurrection.
During the early development of iconography, historical details of Jerusalem were often incorporated into depictions of the Holy Sepulchre. The representation of the tomb evolved from a circular building with a dome (known as a rotunda) to a more vertical or diagonal representation with a focus on the burial shrouds within. These shrouds are typically shown in two parts: the lower portion and the upper cloth that covers Christ's face.
In some icons, a suggestion of Christ's presence is conveyed by depicting Him as a towering figure amidst the mountains in the background.
Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. It is decorated with gold-plating of some elements.
This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones.
We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.
