Saints Cyril and Methodius are remembered especially for their ninth-century mission among the Slavic peoples. They created a written script for the Slavs and translated the Gospel, the Apostolic writings, and the Psalter from Greek into the Slavic language. Through their preaching and teaching in Great Moravia (present-day Czechia and Slovakia) and Pannonia (in the region of present-day Hungary), they defended the use of the Slavic language in worship, making the Word of God accessible to those whom they served.

After the repose of Saints Cyril and Methodius, their close disciple Saint Clement continued their work of Christian enlightenment in the Balkans, particularly in the region of Ohrid. There he taught the people to read and write, served as a bishop, preached, and produced some of the earliest examples of Slavic Christian literature.

Saint Clement is traditionally associated with the development and spread of the script that became known as Cyrillic, named in honour of his teacher Saint Cyril. Together with the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, his work played a decisive role in shaping the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Slavic Orthodox world.

The importance of these holy teachers is reflected in the icon painted in our studio. The saints, depicted in their episcopal vestments, hold together a single scroll bearing the Slavic alphabet — a symbol of the written tradition through which the Orthodox faith has been handed down among Slavic peoples, especially through the Church Slavonic language of worship.
