016-XC Jesus Wearing The Crown of Thorns
This lacquered printed icon of Jesus wearing the Crown of Thorns shows the Savior amidst his passion before his death on the cross. There is a crown of thorns on the Savior's head, a soldier's coat on his left shoulder that was meant to imitate the purple garments of a king, and there is a rod in his bound hands. This icon of Savior wearing the Crown of Thorns is rather rare, and it is also referred to as The King of Judah. That was how the soldiers mockingly called Jesus, unaware of the fact that the Man who stood in front of them was the Lord himself. There is a hymn sung during the Matins of the Holy Friday: Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung on the tree, The King of the angels is decked with a crown of thorns. He who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery. He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face. The Bridegroom of the Church is affixed to the Cross with nails. The Son of the virgin is pierced by a spear. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. We worship Thy passion, O Christ. Show us also Thy glorious resurrection." This is a half-length variant of this icon; we also offer a shoulder-length variant of the same image.
