077-CB Holy Apostle Paul
Lacquered icon on wood. A printed image is glued to a wooden board and covered with a layer of transparent lacquer, which gives the icon extra protection. This icon of Holy Apostle Paul is one of the icons that belong to Zvenigorod Order - a series of icons painted by St Andrei Rublev in the beginning of the 15th century. Allegedly, the Deesis of Zvenigorod (i.e. a set of icons with the icon of Christ in the center) originally consisted of seven (or nine) icons but only three of them have survived to date: the icon of the Holy Savior, St Michael the Archangel, and this icon of St Paul.
According to the Byzantine tradition, Apostle Paul used to be painted as a stern-looking and resolute man, but this icon shows him bowing down before Christ and filled with contemplation and inner silence. The harmonious colors of this icon enhance the feeling of prayerful concentration, purity and harmony of the image by their refined transitions and soft shades. This lacquered icon of St Paul comes in several sizes.
