A handpainted icon of the Mother of God of Philermos (also known as the "Madonna of the Knights").
It was discovered in Rhodes by the Knights of St John known as the Knights of Rhodes and then of Malta, while withdrawing from Palestine in 1306. This very antique icon was preserved in a sanctuary on Mount Phileremou in the midst of thick woods and had been brought from Jerusalem where, tradition has it, the painting was executed by the Evangelist Luke.

Feast day: 25 October.

Materials

  • natural wooden board (lime, pine, alder) with oak splines;
  • cloth from fabric (linen, canvas),
  • gesso,
  • tempera paints (ground minerals, precious and semiprecious stones mixed with egg yolk),
  • gold leaf of various hues,
  • tinted wax,
  • linseed oil,
  • hide glue,
  • varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic).

Decoration

This icon has a handcarved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the margins, the background, and the halos; gold-painting on the vestments; chiseling and engraving on gesso; the halo is decorated with precious stones in casts.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
