Comforter Icon of the Theotokos is from icon-painting studio of St Elisabeth Convent.

The Mother of God's Comforter icon is a rare depiction of the Theotokos painted in the Russian style.  It portrays Mary cradling the child Jesus on her arm while placing Her other arm on His abdomen. This moving image has long fascinated the iconographers of Saint Elisabeth Convent's icon painting workshop, who just completed its copy.

The original is kept at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos. The earliest miracle associated with it dates back to 807, when the monastery was attacked by pirates who had previously bribed a monk to open the gate for them. Three other monks who had offended God with their sins were standing at the gate, unaware of the attack, and were preparing to open the gate as soon as the fourth monk turned the key. But they heard the voice of the Mother of God telling them to keep it closed. She had interceded for the sinners before the Lord, and He let them spare their lives.

 

Materials

 This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Acrylic paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Size

The price of the Comforter Icon of the Mother of God is for the size 19×25 cm. 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel and is covered with gold leaf. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the Comforter Icon of the Mother of God and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
