Venerable Sergius, known in the world as Bartholomew, was born in 1314 near Rostov. His parents were pious nobles, Kirill and Maria, who raised him in the Christian faith.

At seven, young Bartholomew began his education but struggled terribly with his studies. The boy faced tough times—his parents fretted, his teachers sighed, and his peers jeered at his lack of progress.

Bartholomew cried out to the Lord with all his heart, pleading for wisdom and skill. One day, deep in the forest, he met an angel disguised as an elder monk. Seeing the boy’s sadness, the stranger blessed him and promised that from that day forward, the young man would grasp scholarly learning more readily than others. And this prediction came true.

When their parents departed this world, Bartholomew and his brother Stephen withdrew to the woodland to live as hermits. There, they built a cell and a church in honour of the Holy Trinity.

The harshness of the wilderness soon became too much for Stephen, and he chose to move to the Moscow Monastery of the Theophany. Bartholomew, however, embraced the monastic life, taking the name Sergius. Word of his austere lifestyle spread, drawing twelve monks to him, and he became their abbot. Thus began the story of the great Holy Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius.

At that time, Russia groaned under the Tatar yoke. Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoy sought Sergius's blessing and received two of the monastery’s monks to aid him in battle against the enemy. The saint foretold a Russian triumph in the coming fight, and indeed, on the fields of Kulikovo, his prophecy came to pass.

Venerable Sergius departed to the Lord in his old age, having instructed the monks to keep their souls pure. The saint's incorrupt relics rest in the Trinity Cathedral of the monastery.

The feast days of Saint Sergius of Radonezh are 18 July (uncovering of the relics) and 8 October (repose).

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. It is decorated with gold-plating of the halos, the background, the margins, and other elements. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. 

This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones.
