Icon of St. Porphyrius is painted with natural tempera paints in the icon-painting studio of St Elisabeth Convent.

Saint Porphyrius suffered during the reign of Julian the Apostate in the year 361. Before his martyrdom, he had been an actor. During festivities held for the emperor’s birthday, he took part in a theatrical mockery of Holy Baptism. Yet in the midst of the performance, as he entered the water and pronounced the baptismal words — “The servant of God, Porphyrius, is baptised in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” — the grace of God touched his heart.

Emerging from the water, he openly confessed himself a Christian before the crowd. By order of Julian, he was immediately subjected to torture and eventually beheaded for his faith.

Materials

Natural wooden board (lime, pine, alder) with oak splines,
cloth from low-count fabric (linen, canvas),
gesso,
tempera paints (ground minerals, precious and semiprecious stones mixed with egg yolk),
gold leaf of various hues,
tinted wax,
linseed oil,
hide glue,
varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic).

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo and other elements of the icon, gold-painting on the vestment.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

The final price of Saint Boniface and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
