Description

On the fourth Sunday of Great Lent, the Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable John Climacus.

John was born in Constantinople and received a high-quality education. At the age of 16, he embraced monasticism and went to live on Mount Sinai. There, he was mentored by Father Martyrius and devoted his life to obedience, repentance, and solitude even after his mentor's passing. After 40 years of exceptional monastic life, John became the Abbot of the Monastery of the Theotokos the Unburnt Bush Icon on Mount Sinai. His outstanding leadership earned him the title "the new Moses."

Eager for renewed solitude in his later years, John stepped down from his abbotship and returned to the desert. He departed to the Lord on 30 March. Although the exact year remains unknown, it is believed to be either the late 6th or mid-7th century.

Venerable John's enduring legacy lies in his seminal work, "The Ladder of Divine Ascent," considered one of the most significant works on Christian asceticism. This text guides believers through 30 "rungs," representing steps to spiritual growth by overcoming vices and cultivating virtues. It offers valuable insights for fostering spiritual development throughout one's life.

Commemorated on April 12.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Lime, alder, or pine board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Gold-plating of the halos and the background. This icon of St John Climacus may be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

The inscription on the icon can be made in any language.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size, decorations, the difficulty of its composition, gold-plating. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
