Description

This is one of the first iconographic images of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Mother of God is portrayed with raised hands to symbolize her intercession for the faithful before the Lord and her blessing.

In February 1170, Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky besieged Veliky Novgorod, intending to annex the independent Novgorod lands to the Suzdal principality. 

Archbishop John of Novgorod prayed for the city’s deliverance for three days. On the third night, while standing before an icon of the Saviour, he heard a voice directing him to seek the Mother of God’s intercession. Clergy and laity processed with a particularly revered icon of Our Lady from the church to the city walls, placing it before the enemy to call them to repentance. However, the enemy archers began firing at the fortifications. An arrow struck the icon. Miraculously, the icon turned to face the city, and tears flowed from the Mother of God’s eyes. 

Tradition tells that after this sacrilegious attack, the enemy became paralysed with fear and fled. The people of Novgorod began venerating the icon, known as "The Sign," on 27 November (10 December). 

The Theotokos again aided Novgorod in 1611 when Swedish troops attempted to capture the city. The enemy could not enter the open doors of the church where a service was being held. First, they retreated from the church, then abandoned the city altogether.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halos, the background, and some other elements are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon of the Mother of God and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
