Description

Saint Marina was raised by a Christian nursemaid. When her father, a pagan priest, discovered his daughter's embrace of Christianity, he was consumed by rage and disowned her. At the tender age of fifteen, Marina found herself seized by pagans and incarcerated.

Undeterred by the looming prospect of suffering, Saint Marina bravely confessed her faith before the Roman governor, Olymbrios. Her beauty captivated him, and he devised a plan to win her over. He pressured her to renounce Christianity and accept his marriage proposal.  When Marina resolutely refused, Olymbrios subjected her to a brutal beating. He ordered her to be stretched upon a board and pierced with sharp tridents.

That night, within the confines of the prison, a demon manifested before her in the form of a serpent. Just as Jonah was swallowed by a whale, the serpent engulfed Saint Marina whole. However, within the serpent's belly, she boldly made the sign of the Cross, which tore the serpent asunder from within. Emerging unharmed, she found her wounds miraculously healed.

The following day, the relentless torture resumed. Olymbrios ordered Marina to be drowned.  With fervent prayers on her lips, Saint Marina submerged into a barrel of water. At that moment, a white dove descended from Heaven, carrying a golden crown in its beak. A radiant light enveloped her as her shackles fell, and all traces of her previous torment vanished.  Saint Marina glorified the Holy Trinity that led her to her Baptism. The overwhelming power of this divine intervention shook the hearts of many present, leading them to embrace the Christian faith. Olymbrios condemned fifteen thousand newfound believers to death, and Saint Maria embraced her martyrdom by the sword.

  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon with a hand-carved rectangular central panel is covered with gold leaf. It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
