This is a waist-long icon of St John the Baptist. He is shown holding a cross-crowned staff in his left hand, and a cup with his own head as a symbol of his martyrdom for Christ's sake and a prototype of the redemptive sacrifice by Jesus.
Commemorated on March 9, June 7 (uncovering of his holy head), and July 7 (the saint's birthday).
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Acrylic or tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
