Description
Saint Righteous John of Kronstadt, born John Ilyich Sergiev, entered the world on 19 October 1829 in the village of Sura, Arkhangelsk Province, to a modest family of humble means.
At age 9, his father gathered his family’s last savings to send John to the parish school in Arkhangelsk. He had great difficulty learning to read and write. Deeply distressed, he fervently prayed to God for help. God answered his prayers, and as he later recounted, "divine grace illuminated my mind, and the veil fell from his eyes." In 1851, John Sergiev graduated from seminary and proceeded with his studies at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. From the day of his ordination, he committed himself to service to both God and his fellow man, celebrating the Divine Liturgy daily.
With his money Father John established the House of Labor in Kronstadt, encompassing workshops, a school, a kindergarten, a medical institution, and a shelter. He also opened six women's monasteries across various dioceses.
Recognizing the immense need for spiritual guidance, Father John pioneered the practice of general confession in Russia. Due to the large number of congregants seeking confession, traditional individual confessions would have extended the church service well past noon, and the daily confession of thousands of people was physically impossible.
Saint Righteous John of Kronstadt reposed on 20 December 1908, aged 80.

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel and is covered with gold leaf. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso.
