Saint George is shown as a mounted warrior who strikes a serpent with his spear. This way of depicting him is based on a legend, according to which St George rescued inhabitants of a certain town from death. This legend is often interpreted as an allegorical representation of a triumph over the devil embodied by the serpent. It is worth noting that St George holds his spear with ease and does not strain his muscles before piercing the enemy. It means that the saints does not rely on his own power but instead, it is God who directs his hand, while he is but a tool, an instrument for God's will.
