The Summary of the Holy Protection Icon

The Protection of the Theotokos icon is a revered icon in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It depicts the Virgin Mary holding her veil over the people, symbolizing her protection and intercession.

The origin of the feast is related to a miracle that occurred in the year 910. Constantinople was surrounded by barbarian troops. In those times, such raids often ended in bloody reprisals, so the city's inhabitants prepared for possible death.

The people, along with the patriarch and the emperor, prayed to the Mother of God for intercession in the Blachernae Church, where the robe and belt of the Mother of God were kept. And blessed Andrew had a vision of the Most Holy Virgin Mary. In a host of angels and saints, she walked across the sky, and then took off her veil and spread it over the praying people.

The Protection of the Mother of God delivered the Byzantine capital from enemy troops. A storm arose and smashed the barbarians' ships.

The celebration of the Protection of the Mother of God in Russia was established in the 12th century during the reign of Prince Andrew the God-loving, who greatly honoured his heavenly patron - blessed Andrew.

Feast day on October 14.

All inscriptions on this icon can be made in any language.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved central panel. The margins and the halos are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of icon of the Protection of the Theotokos and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
