Description of Hodegetria icon

In Orthodoxy, there are over 800 icons of the Mother of God, yet despite this significant number, most of them can be categorised into three iconographic types: Orans, Hodegetria, and Eleusa. According to tradition, the first three icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, written by the Evangelist Luke, served as the starting point for this typology.

The iconographic type "Hodegetria," meaning "She who points the way," or "She who shows the path," originates from Byzantium, where it gained the most prominence in the middle of the 5th century. It is one of the best-known images of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Christ Child.

The distinctive feature of icons of this type is that the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus are depicted as more mature than in other images. The Most Holy Virgin supports the Son of God with one hand and points to Him with the other, providing spiritual direction for Christians.

The hand of the Virgin is pointing towards her Son and this if the source of the name "Hodegetria" which means "director" or "indicator of the way" to Christ. The icon was housed in a holy chamber attached to the Monastery of the Hodegon.

One of the most well-known icons of the Hodegetria type is the Kazan Icon. Other icons in this category include:

  • The Unfading Flower icon;
  • the Smolensk icon;
  • the Intercessor of Sinners icon.

Feast day on August 10.

All inscriptions on this icon can be made in any language.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved central panel. The margins and the halos are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
