The brief story about hand-painted icon of Christ Enthroned
 
The Christ Enthroned icon portrays Jesus Christ seated on a majestic throne as the ruler of the universe. With a compassionate expression and a gesture of blessing, the icon symbolizes His divine authority and mercy.
 
This icon of Christ wearing a mitre represents the royalty. He is the Pantocrator, the King of Heaven, ruling over all the visible and invisible world. His throne, with its cushions and footstool, is much higher than the one on earth. The icon also contains the Gospel placed on Christ's lap, and Christ is shown in full height. Since the 12th century, this icon has begun to spread on frescoes in Russian Orthodox churches.
 
The Great Hierarch is a symbolic title of Jesus Christ based on Old Testament prophecy ("Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek" (Psalm 109:4)).
 

Materials 

  • Natural wooden board (lime, pine, alder) with oak splines;
  • cloth from low-count fabric (linen, canvas),
  • gesso,
  • tempera paints (ground minerals, precious and semiprecious stones mixed with egg yolk),
  • gold leaf of various hues,
  • tinted wax,
  • linseed oil,
  • hide glue,
  • varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic).


Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo and other elements of the icon, gold-painting on the vestment.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

The final price of the Christ Enthroned icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
