The summary about the Annunciation of the Theotokos icon

On the day of the Annunciation (from the Greek "Evangelion"), the first Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah was fulfilled: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel" (Genesis 3:15). The "seed of the woman" is Jesus Christ.

In the icon, the Archangel Gabriel appears before the Mother of God to announce to her the conception by the Holy Spirit and the birth of the God-child. From heaven onto the Most Pure Virgin descends a ray, in which a dove is depicted, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit.

The Virgin Mary, among other pious virgins, was chosen to make yarn for the veil of the Jerusalem Temple. Therefore, in some icons, the Mother of God is depicted with yarn in her hands. Spinning is associated with the creation of the flesh of the Lord.

The Annunciation of the Mother of God is one of the twelve great feasts. Therefore, the icon is included in the festive row of the iconostasis and is also placed on the royal doors.

Commemorated on April 7.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, alder, or pine board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Gold-plating of the halos, the background, the margins, and other elements.

This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones.
