Description

Born into a devout family in 3rd century Beirut, Asia Minor, young George embarked on a path of courage and faith. As a Roman soldier, his valour caught the eye of Emperor Diocletian, leading to his promotion to a high-ranking commander. Performing heroic deeds and earning the title "Victorious," George seemed destined for a successful military career.

When the prosecution of Christians began, Saint George distributed his wealth to the poor, boldly declared his Christianity before the emperor, and refused to renounce his beliefs despite pleas and torture. Ultimately, Emperor Diocletian condemned him to death, and on May 6, 303, George met his martyrdom by the sword.

Icons depict him mounted on a white horse, vanquishing a serpent with his spear. This image reflects the miracles attributed to him, particularly the slaying of a fearsome creature - a python, crocodile, or perhaps a giant lizard - terrorizing Beirut. George saved the king's daughter, destined to be the next victim, and permanently freed the region from the beast's threat. The bay, near which Beirut is located, still bears the name of the Great Martyr George.

His feat, along with the miraculous resurrection of a farmer's ox, cemented Saint George's role as the protector of animals and those facing danger from predators. His legacy extends further, venerating him as a symbol of military valour and unwavering loyalty to his homeland.

Lilac — amethyst, stichtite, lepidolite;
Gray — galenite, antimonite, molybdenite;
Orange — crocoite, carneol, wulfenite;
Black — gagate, shungite, aegirine;
Brown — jasper, sphalerite, volcanic rocks, lemonite;
Green — malachite, dioptase, diopside, serpentine, onyx, amazonite.
