Description

The Transfiguration is when Christ showed His divine nature, divulged not to the crowds, but only to His chosen disciples, after a long, hard climb up the mountain. Revealing how Jesus was divine, two prophets appeared before the disciples: Moses, who came from beyond the grave, and Elijah, who went up to heaven without dying. The disciples did not just see Jesus’ divine side shining through, but they had solid proof that with God there are no dead—with Him, all are alive.

At the centre of the icon, within a circle of glory – the mandorla – stands Christ in radiant white robes. To the left is the prophet Elijah, and to the right, Moses holding a codex-shaped book in his hand. The figures of the prophets, in some cases, touch the mandorla, while in others, they stand just outside its bounds. The shape of the mandorla might be a circle or an oval with pointed ends. Christ and the prophets stand on hillocks. From the mandorla, or even from the figure of the Saviour Himself, three rays descend, reaching the apostles below. 

A 16th-century Pskov icon enriches this scene with angels accompanying the prophets and two additional episodes. On the left, Christ ascends the mountain with His disciples, while on the right, they walk down.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The background, the margins, and other parts of the icon are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The inscription on this icon can be written in any language.

The final price of the icon of the Transfiguration and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
