Hand painted icon of the righteous Patriarch Joseph the Fair (the All-Comely) is made with tempera paints in icon-painting studio of St Elisabeth Convent.

Righteous Joseph, one of the twelve sons of the Patriarch Jacob, is often depicted in garments recalling Egyptian nobility. Sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph was raised up by God to become Pharaoh’s chief minister, interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams with wisdom.

Called “the All-Comely” for his striking beauty, he resisted temptation and proved even more beautiful in soul. In Christian understanding he is a type (i.e., foreshadowing) of Christ: innocently betrayed yet, by God’s providence, becoming the saviour of his people. His righteousness, chastity, and readiness to forgive remain a school for the heart.

Feast day: December 28.

Gold leaf
Linseed oil
Hide glue
Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins and the halos are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones.
