Icon of the Veneration of the Three Wise Men

A painted icon of the Veneration of the Three Wise Men.

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” Finally, they made it to Bethlehem and saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Materials 

• natural wooden board (lime, pine, alder) with oak splines
• cloth from low-count fabric (linen, canvas)
• gesso
• tempera paints 
• gold leaf of various hues
• tinted wax
• linseed oil
• hide glue
• varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic).

Available in the following sizes: 30×41 cm, 40×52 cm.

Decorations

A hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halos, and the background of this icon are covered with various shades of gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
