Handmade St Panteleimon icon from finely ground semiprecious stones

This icon typically depicts Saint Panteleimon as a physician, emphasizing his role as the patron saint of healing and medicine. Believers often turn to this icon in times of illness, seeking the intercession of St. Panteleimon for physical and spiritual healing, making it an essential and cherished icon in Orthodox Christian tradition.

He was born in the late 3rd century to the noble family of Eustratius and Euvula in Nicomedia. While his father, a high-ranking citizen, adhered to paganism, his mother secretly practised Christianity.

Panteleimon, blessed with a gentle and compassionate nature, seemed preordained for peaceful pursuits rather than the military or political path his father had envisioned. His exceptional sensitivity towards those suffering earned him the endearing nickname "Panteleimon," meaning "all-merciful."

Recognising his son's aptitude and aligning with his interests, Eustratius enrolled him in medical school. During his studies, Panteleimon garnered considerable attention and even envy. Despite this, he remained humble, often treating patients without expecting payment. This selfless practice further fuelled the animosity of some of his less virtuous colleagues.

When Panteleimon's Christian faith came to light, his envious colleagues saw an opportunity to eliminate their competition. In that era, openly professing Christianity was essentially a death sentence, and the only escape lay in renouncing the faith.

Even the Roman emperor, acknowledging Panteleimon's exceptional talent, offered him the position of his personal physician in exchange for renouncing Christ. Yet Panteleimon remained steadfast. He endured both interrogations and brutal torture without breaking, ultimately meeting his death through beheading.
