Description

The Great Martyr Saint Barbara was born in the 4th century in the city of Heliopolis, in present-day Syria, into a wealthy Pagan family. Her father, Dioscorus sought to shield his only daughter from outside influences and the burgeoning Christian faith. With this aim, he constructed a lofty tower, confining Saint Barbara within its walls.

For a time, Saint Barbara's education was entrusted solely to pagan tutors. However, gazing upon the stars from her window, she began to contemplate the existence of a wise and divine Creator. This introspection made her realise that the pagan gods were only the fruits of human imagination.  The young Saint Barbara dedicated herself to the true God and resolutely rejected her father's attempts to secure a marriage for her.  Dioscorus, misinterpreting his daughter's resolve as bitterness stemming from her isolation, permitted Saint Barbara to leave the tower and choose her companions freely. He hoped that she would socialize with married women and reconsider her resolve.

Saint Barbara encountered Christians. Enlightened about the Triune God, she received Holy Baptism. When Dioscorus discovered his daughter's conversion, he disowned her publicly and surrendered her to her tormentors.

As she was led to her execution, she offered a fervent prayer to God, beseeching Him to grant grace to all who would remember her and to shield them from sudden and unprepared death. A heavenly voice confirmed her pleas would be answered. Saint Barbara endured her martyrdom with courage, ultimately meeting her death by beheading.

The faithful often petition her intercession for the critically ill and those nearing the end of their earthly lives, so that they may have the opportunity to confess their sins and receive Holy Communion before departing this world.  In some icons, Saint Barbara is depicted holding a chalice, a symbolic representation of this powerful intercessory role.

This icon is painted using the following materials:

    • Lime, alder, or pine board
    • Gesso
    • Colored wax
    • Gold leaf
    • Linseed oil
    • Hide glue
    • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

    • 7.5×10 cm (without a hand-carved rectangular central panel, shoulder-long)
    • 11×14.5 cm (shoulder-long)
    • 14.5x19.5 cm
    • 16.5×21.5 cm
    • 19×25 cm
    • 23.5×31 cm
    • 27×35 cm
    • 30×41 cm
    • 40×52 cm

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
