Description

Though much of Saint Ignatius' life remains veiled in time, tradition narrates that he was the very child embraced by Jesus, the one told to "be like children" to enter heaven (Matthew 18:3). He received the title "God-bearer," reflecting his deep love for Christ, carrying Him close within his heart. He was the disciple of Saint John the Theologian.
 
Ignatius served as a bishop of Antioch for four decades. During the reign of Emperor Trajan, he was arrested, condemned, and despatched on a journey from Antioch to Rome, facing execution. Along the way, he penned seven letters to various churches (Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Philadelphia, Smyrna, and Rome), and one to his friend Polycarp of Smyrna.
Finally, upon reaching Rome in 107 AD, Ignatius faced his final trial. Thrown to lions, he embraced his fate, becoming a martyr for the faith.

Commemorated on January 2 and February 11 (translation of his holy relics).

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

  • 40×52 cm

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, and other elements are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon of St Ignatius the God-Bearer and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
